Germany approves additional Arms Exports to Israel

German authorities have approved additional arms exports to Israel worth more than 30 million euros in the past few weeks.

Germany has given the green light to arms exports to Israel worth more than 160 million euros this year, despite growing international criticism of what human rights groups call Israel’s genocidal actions in the Gaza Strip.

Der Spiegel reported that the latest data on arms exports was obtained from the German Ministry of Economics.

While the German government has fulfilled many of Israel’s requests for weapons, it has not supplied goods classified as weapons of war, such as artillery or tank ammunition.

Der Spiegel reported that the Tel Aviv government made a specific request for such weapons shortly after the Hamas attack in October 2023, but so far there has been no green light from Berlin.

The delivery of weapons that could be used in Gaza was suspended in March after Nicaragua filed a lawsuit against Germany at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), accusing it of aiding and abetting genocide in Gaza.

Germany is one of Israel’s key allies, and Chancellor Olaf Scholz has often stressed Germany’s special responsibility for Israel’s security because of the country’s Nazi past.

Critics, however, argue that Germany’s unwavering support for the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is undermining its international credibility and further isolating Berlin on the global stage, AA writes.
