[wzslider autoplay=”true”]The Anatomy Museum of the Department of Anatomy and Histology of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Sarajevo is a place where one can learn a lot about the animal world and the interest exhibits “trap” everyone who visits the museum.

Founded in 1951, this museum still attracts attention of scientists and students, who reveal something new among more than 850 exhibits.

Head of the mentioned department Rizah Avdić said that every exhibit in the museum has its story. For example, visitors can see a stuffed lynx killed several years ago by hunters from Fojnica, a Bengal tiger that was being held as a pet in a private property, a mouflon, an antelope, monkeys, ostriches, dogs, horses, turtles and sheep. There is also a large skeleton of the English racehorse which had to be put down due to injury obtained in a race, as well as the Bosnian mountain horse whose skeleton served as a model for the well-known monument in front of the building of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

Avdić highlighted that museums of this type are a rarity, which is why colleagues from different countries visit it. Avdić said that every sample requires three to six months of work, with a lot of patience and preciseness. A significant role in the process of preparation and processing of bones is played by the degreasing apparatus, and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Sarajevo is the only faculty in the region that possesses this device.

“The apparatus degreases the bone, leaving it entirely clean, ready for use and without bacteria,” Avdić explained.

In addition to animal skeletons, the museum also features a human skeleton which serves for the study of comparative anatomy of animals and humans. Exhibits also include a part of skeleton whose exact origin is still unknown, but it is believed that it is a fossil and that it belongs to a large animal.

The Museum was founded by the professor Ibrahim Arnautović. Entrance is free of charge.
