High Representative met with the President of the Central Election Commission

The High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) Christian Schmidt spoke today in Sarajevo with the President of the Central Election Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina (CEC) Irena Hadžiabdić and Secretary General Goran Mišković about the integrity of the electoral process in Bosnia and Herzegovina, i.e. technical changes to the Election Law of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Office of the High Representative (OHR) announced that the meeting discussed “the necessary reforms to improve the integrity of the electoral process in BiH and the important role of the CEC in the prevention of election theft”.

In December, Schmidt announced the imposition of amendments to the Election Law of Bosnia and Herzegovina with the aim of strengthening the integrity of elections, if these amendments are not adopted by the BiH Parliamentary Assembly.

The House of Representatives of the BiH Parliament adopted those changes, but SNSD deputies Milorad Dodik and HDZ BiH did not vote for them.

Those two parties, even the SNSD itself, in the House of Peoples of the Parliament of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which must confirm all laws adopted in the House of Representatives, have a control package of votes, with which they can “overturn” the adopted amendments to the Election Law.

Dodik previously announced that the Republika Srpska will adopt its election law, if Schmidt imposes changes to the election law at the state level.
