High Representative Christian Schmidt stated he was ready to use the Bonn powers if the country is threatened.
“I remain optimistic that we will find common solutions to these issues, which will be very good. My offer is still open in relation to the representatives of Republika Srpska (RS). We need to cooperate on the basis of trust and I am ready for that,” Schmidt said.
Also, he stressed that although some politicians from the entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), RS do not recognize him as the High Representative, he has much more friendly support than is thought.
“The problem in BiH is that most politicians, mostly gentlemen, act as if they are forming a state. Precisely when it comes to negotiations, I suggested that where something is allegedly prevented or if something does not work, it should be discussed, and not that they immediately question the existence and mention some higher power. I said, let’s solve this and that thing at the entity level or this other part at the state level. It’s not a damn job. Unfortunately, many politicians here in BiH use it to get some benefit for themselves. They scare people, in part even claim false things,” Schmid told.
He also mentioned that certain issues must be resolved within political circles in BiH.
In the meantime, I can still say that I can make my own judgment and it is not that I want to use the Bonn powers at any moment or every day. But when I see that the structures of this country are endangered, then I will certainly not hesitate to use them. It is no longer the period when Paddy Ashdown was here, but of course, I will react in favor of the country. When it comes to the Election Law, I still think that solutions must come from domestic authorities, “ Schmidt concluded, adding that his Bonn powers are in the drawer and said that” no one should be deceived.“, Klix.ba writes.
