Hungary will start border controls with Romania, which has joined the land visa-free Schengen area, from January 1.
Border checks with Romania will be reintroduced to “prevent threats to public order and internal security,” Hungarian media reported, citing police sources.
Hungarian police warned travelers entering the country that random checks may be carried out and advised them to carry the necessary documents.
According to the newspaper “Libertatea”, more than 30 border crossings in Romania, which will join the Schengen area by land in 2025, will be closed.
Random checks will also continue for six months on the Bulgarian-Romanian border.
Romania and Bulgaria were granted permission to enter the Schengen area by land from January 1, 2025, on December 12 this year.
