The Increase in Prices of Milk, Meat, Fruit and Vegetables announced in BiH?

Due to drought and frost and hail in the previous period, which caused great damage to agricultural products, the prices of milk, meat, fruit, and vegetables will be increased in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as announced by agricultural producers.

The greatest damage was done to yields and crops of corn and grass in the area of Bosnian Posavina, according to agricultural producer Nihad Hamusic from Brcko.

The consequences of droughts in BiH can already be felt, says Hamusic, because the production of milk is significantly decreased.

“Those a bit bigger cattle-breeders maybe will not close their farms, they gathered some hay, but there will be 30 to 40 % less milk, that is a sure thing. We will somehow manage to feed our cattle. However, a large number of them are thinking about reducing the livestock fund for sure. But smaller cattle farmers are in a big trouble. Bigger ones find some way out, they ensure themselves, but the biggest damage will be done to those who have smaller livestock fund,” stated Hamusic.

It is no better situation when it comes to the consequences of drought in other branches of agriculture as well. Hamusic, who is dealing with greenhouse production, both in the open and in the interior, is already counting his damage.

“There is some yield that we managed to save in the greenhouses, but in the open everything is almost destroyed. If we manage to cover our expenses this year it will be great, we will be more than happy. To stays on a positive 0, that would be really great,” stated Hamusic.

Due to drought, as well as frost and hail in the spring, the fruit was also damaged in the area of north-eastern Bosnia. Hamusic stated that when it comes to the fruit in that area, there is no more than 30 % left.

Due to everything that happened to agricultural production in BiH, he believes that the increase in prices is inevitable in the upcoming period.

“There will be an increase in prices of milk, meat, vegetables, and fruits. Especially in the area of BiH. But the same situation is present in the region and in the neighborhood as well. If there was not a drought, there was hail and everything was destroyed,” stated Nihad Hamusic.
