Izetbegovic: I spoke with Schmidt, it’s better that they don’t force us to do what we’ve never done

SDA party President Bakir Izetbegovic held a press conference today in Sarajevo where he spoke about the analysis that the SDA legal team did on the basis of the “non-paper” amendments to the Election Law that the high representative will allegedly impose.

The president of the SDA pointed out that earlier today he had a telephone conversation with the high representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Christian Schmidt, stressing that he reiterated his views regarding the amendments to the Election Law that appeared in the public, and which he had already explained earlier.

“At first I couldn’t believe that he would really be willing to do such things. I then sent a message that my recommendation was that he should not engage in it because it is a political minefield that can harm the Federation if he does it. Today I spoke with him on the phone and sent him the same warnings and messages,” said Izetbegovic.

He achieved, claims Izetbegovic, that Schmidt will not make a decision without consulting the political parties and the FBiH Parliament.

“The legal team of the SDA made a very thorough analysis, based on what we had at our disposal. The elements of that analysis are the famous 3 percent. According to us, Bosniaks from the Posavina or Livanski cantons would not be represented, and probably also from Bosna Podrinne Canton, who would not fill the House of peoples in general. The Federation is a federation of cantons and that is against the Convention on Human Rights. The Club of HDZ deputies would get exclusivity forever to represent Croats in the Federation, which would increase the chances of the SNSD getting a control package in the House of Peoples. Such solutions increase the asymmetry,” emphasized Izetbegovic.

He believes that with the announced changes HDZ is getting “on a platter” what it did not get in the negotiations on changes to the Election Law.

“The People’s Club would have an irreplaceable role. Eight people would control the Federation. Regarding the reduction of the vital national interest, it would additionally strengthen asymmetric solutions. As for the appointment of the FBiH Government, the blockades are strengthened, the connection between HDZ and SNSD is enabled. As for the Constitutional Court the mechanism is good, as are the deadlines for adopting acts,” the president of the SDA pointed out, Klix.ba writes.

Izetbegovic said that he is glad that numerous political parties are gathering in front of the OHR building tonight at 7 p.m., which he sees as joint action that is very necessary.

“I proposed this kind of thing to Komsic on Friday, but we can also do it this way. We will go together to stop this thing. I think he will force us to do some things that we have never done. He does not have to be a, neither Croatian president of the Federation forever, nor will he always be the first a Bosniak FBiH man. He would like us not to be pushed in that direction. When you create mechanisms that are not fair and work another straitjacket, I hope we will not be put in that position,” explained Izetbegovic.
