12825603_1123705754347046_506017544_nThe phenomenon of learning Turkish and Arabian languages is becoming all the more frequent in elementary and high schools in Sarajevo. Namely, Arabian is being taught in five elementary schools and Turkish in nine. When it comes to high schools, Arabian is taught in two and Turkish in three schools.

Introduction of the Turkish language in teaching processes across all education levels in educational institutions in the Sarajevo Canton began in June last year, when the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth of the Sarajevo Canton obtained consent from the Government for introducing this language in schools.

So far, the students have shown great interest, especially in Turkish language, thus the introduction of this language in schools was somehow self-inflicted.

Arabian language is being taught in elementary schools “Edhem Mulabdić”, “Vrhbosna”, “El Mannar” and the First private elementary school “Isa-beg Ishaković”, as well as in high schools Gazi Husrev-Bey’s Madrasah and the First Bosniak High School.

Turkish as a second foreign language is being taught in elementary schools “Čengić Vila 1”, “Edhem Mulabdić”, “Mirsad Prnjavorac”, “Vrhbosna”, Prva osnovna škola, Šesta osnovna škola, Treća osnovna škola, International Primary School and Isa-beg Ishaković, with a total of 540 pupils attending Turkish language lessons.

The Ministry of Education, Science and Youth of the Sarajevo Canton is giving consent for teaching plans and programs that are to be implemented in elementary and high schools. Students opt for the second foreign language through surveys that are administrated at the end of school year, so that activities for teaching the foreign language could be adequately prepared.

Based on the signed Agreement on cooperation between the Embassy of Turkey in BiH and the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth of the Sarajevo Canton, the process of introducing Turkish language in elementary schools in the Sarajevo Canton has begun in the academic year 2013/2014. Five teachers are currently teaching Turkish.
