The Lebanese army announced that it has begun deploying troops to the South Litani region in accordance with the ceasefire reached between Israel and Lebanon.

The Lebanese army announced that its forces have begun deploying to the South Litani region in coordination with the United Nations Interim Peacekeeping Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

It said the decision to deploy Lebanese army forces to the South Litani region was “based on the commitment to implement United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 and related obligations.”

The ceasefire came into effect early Wednesday morning to end more than 14 months of fighting between the Israeli army and Hezbollah.

In Article Three of the Lebanon-Israel ceasefire agreement, the parties commit to “taking steps to fully implement UN Security Council Resolution 1701,” while Article Five states that “official Lebanese military and security forces, infrastructure, and weapons will be deployed in the South Litani region.”

More than 3,800 people have been killed in Israeli attacks on Lebanon and more than a million have been displaced since October last year, according to Lebanese health authorities, AA writes.
