Second day of the regular annual conference by the Regional coordination of the associations of families of missing persons from the Western Balkans region yielded some conclusions.
In the first place, families insist that states accelerate the process of searching for missing persons and finding mass graves, and that certain funds are allocated for that purpose, said the Chief of the ICMP’s Western Balkans Program Matthew Holliday.
Holliday added that authorities in BiH must take full responsibility for the process of searching for missing persons, hereby referring to the fact that the time has come to amend the co-founding agreement on the establishment of the Institute for Missing Persons. In other words, the Council of Ministers of BiH should assume full responsibility for the functioning of this institution and for the process of searching for missing persons and their identification.
Furthermore, Holliday stated that families also demand stronger regional cooperation between the countries. As one of the great problems they face, Holliday highlighted unidentified remains. There are over 3.000 unidentified remains in BiH, 700 in Croatia, 400 in Kosovo. Holliday added that this problem must also be solved.
