The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, expressed strong support for Montenegro’s accession to the European Union (EU) during Italy’s presidency in the first half of 2028, as well as for strategic economic connectivity between the two friendly countries, it was stated at the meeting between Meloni and Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajic.

As stated on the X account of Prime Minister of Montenegro Milojko Spajic, a visit by a business delegation is expected in the coming months, and after that, as he noted, an interstate agreement will be concluded.

“We agree that it is necessary to strengthen partnerships with influential actors outside of Europe, especially with credible partners such as the United States (U.S.) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with whom both countries have signed or planned cooperation agreements,” he said.

Montenegro rightfully expects to be the next member of the EU, said the President of the Council of Ministers of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, stating that she is convinced that Montenegro will achieve that goal during Italy’s presidency of the EU in the first half of 2028.

Meloni spoke yesterday with Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajic, who is on his first official visit to Italy at her invitation.

As stated by the Montenegrin Government, the meeting discussed joint projects, cooperation in the fields of infrastructure, defense, and energy, improved connectivity, as well as Italy’s support for Montenegro on its European path.

“The best days for cooperation between Montenegro and Italy are yet to come, and cooperation within the EU will give additional momentum to strengthening overall relations,” it was said during the meeting.

Meloni assessed that Montenegro rightfully expects to be the next EU member state.

“I closely follow your work and I am impressed by the vision and the way you are leading Montenegro. I am convinced that during Italy’s presidency of the EU, in the first half of 2028, Montenegro will become the 28th member,” she said.

Spajic said that Montenegro strongly relies on Italy’s support in the domain of European integration and overall foreign policy and emphasized that traditionally good relations can be further developed in numerous areas, especially in energy.
