MEP Emine Bozkurt on Peljesac Bridge

bozkurtSpokeswoman on Bosnia and Herzegovina for the Social Democrats in the European Parliament Emine Bozkurt has sent written questions to the European Commission’s about the agreement with Croatia about a possible strategy to better connect southern Croatian territory with Dubrovnik, finds “Sarajevo Times”.

“A lot is being said unofficially and in the media, therefore I want the European Commission to explain clearly what exactly was agreed, what does the strategy agreed upon entail, when it is expected and which solutions does it purpose?”, said Bozkurt.

It is alleged that one of these solutions will be the construction of a new Peljesac bridge. Neighboring Bosnia and Herzegovina claims that the construction of the bridge could limit its access to the sea and the waters of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

According to Bozkurt, “I want to know whether the Commission is addressing these issues? Are the interests of Bosnia and Herzegovina taken into account? And whether the EU will finance or co-finance the construction of a new bridge if Bosnia and Herzegovina disagrees with that?

In the past, unresolved border disputes led to problems between the new Member States acceding to the European Union and potential new Member States. Also, with regard to the fact that not all the border issues between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina are solved, Bozkurt wants to know whether the European Commission foresees a role for themselves in finding a solution for these issues.

“It is very important that the EU finds a solution that is acceptable for both countries, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. European Union has an important responsibility to ensure that future disputes be prevented”, said Bozkurt.
