The Square of First Corpus of the Army of the Republic of BiH, which is located in front of the building of Government of Canton Sarajevo, is reconstructed and citizens of Sarajevo will have the opportunity to take a short break and have some rest in its beautiful ambience.
There is a bust of one of the most prominent fighters of working class in Yugoslavia in the park. It is a bust of Djuro Djakovic and the park was named after him once. Next to the bust is memorial plate with the name of Djuro Djakovic. Older citizens of Sarajevo still have the habit to say: “We will meet in the park of Djuro Djakovic”.
“In 1973, a little stone park was created across the Eiffel Bridge and mouth of Kosevo stream into Miljacka River, and its trails lead towards unusual obelisk, a male head with moustache. That park is one of the rare places which is going to stay as it was before and will not change in the next 40 years, and the park is there even today. The park where people will not stop, and will not sit on stone benches since it is too hot or cold on them, there is no shade as there is no single tree in that park, and instead of making a break, people rush from that unusual and hostile place.
Park was named after Djuro Djakovic, and stone bud is monument to Djuro Djakovic, the organizational secretary of Communistic party of Yugoslavia, who was killed back in 1929, during the time of dictatorship of king Aleksandar. Djuro was metalworker, born in Slavonski Brod, who lived in Sarajevo and took part in the first great labour strikes in BiH. In 1914, at the beginning of the war, he publicly rebelled against Austrian declaration of war to Serbia, and he was sentenced to death as traitor.
He was pardoned, and he became one of the founders of Communist party of Yugoslavia in BiH two years after the war. His son Stjepan, who was born in Sarajevo in 1912, was communist and partizan, and he was killed by Ustashas in 1942. One Battalion of 129th international brigade of Spanish Republican Army was named after him, and one military unit of resistance movement consisted of Yugoslavian immigrants, mostly miners from Dalmatian Krajina and surroundings of Imotsko, was also named after him in 1942, in Belgium.
The Monument to Djuro Djakovic in Sarajevo was made by Ljubomir Denkovic, a sculptor and professor at the Academy of Art in Novi Sad, and stone park named after Djuro Djakovic with his monument was opened back in 1973 in the capital of BiH. Historian of art and museum advisor Milos Arsic considers sculptures of Ljubomir Denkovic as sculptures of natural vitalism. By that he implies that artist shapes shapeless mass, not into object of special purpose, but in object that is part of universal, eternal and hidden, object of what exist forever – archetypal.
