More than 10,000 Cholera Cases detected in war-torn Sudan

Amid Sudan’s ongoing civil war, more than 10,000 cases of cholera have been detected, according to health officials.

Sudan’s Health Minister Mohammed Ibrahim said cholera cases had been identified in 12 of the country’s 18 states, adding that the number of cases had reached 10,800.

Ibrahim said that a cholera vaccination campaign was launched last November and December, but due to security problems in the country, the epidemic could not be contained.

Due to the ongoing conflict in Sudan, 70 to 80 percent of hospitals are not fully functional.

The World Health Organization announced last September that cases of cholera and dengue fever had been reported in the eastern part of the country.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been wracked by fighting between the army, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of the country’s ruling Sovereign Council, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Force.

Several Saudi- and US-brokered ceasefire agreements have failed to end the violence.
