Forty-five people were injured Friday in an explosion at a gas station in Rome that reverberated across the city, believed to have been caused by a gas leak while a tanker was emptying fuel into a tank.

The explosion, which occurred early in the morning, shook the windows of many buildings in the Italian capital.

It is believed that the fire was caused by a gas leak while the tanker was filling the fuel tank at the gas station.

“It was as if a bomb had exploded,” Ennio Acquilino, commander of the regional fire service, told AFP.

Among the injured were 24 civilians from the area, as well as 21 emergency services personnel, including 12 policemen and six firefighters.

Two people were hospitalized due to burns and smoke inhalation and their lives are in danger, the Italian news agency AGI reported.
