The Museum “Life in Sarajevo under siege 1992-1995” was officially opened in Sarajevo, precisely on the Day of the beginning of the siege of the city of Sarajevo, that is, the 31st anniversary of the beginning of the longest siege of a capital city in the modern history of warfare.

The official opening of the Museum was attended by the mayor of Sarajevo Benjamina Karic, the director of the Bosnian Museum of Remembrance Merisa Topalovic, the families of the victims and other citizens of Sarajevo.

Mayor Karic stated that for several reasons it is very important that Sarajevo gets a museum like this.

“Finally in our Sarajevo we have the Museum of Sarajevo under siege. This is an extremely important project and I want to congratulate the institution ‘Bosnian Museums of Remembrance’ on this great project. This is important for the city of Sarajevo for all the young generations to come because we know that only with the truth we can fight for a better future,” said Karic, and expressed her gratitude to everyone who participated in the construction of the museum:

“Emotions are mixed. On the one hand, sadness, heavy emotions and remembering all that the citizens of Sarajevo went through during the siege, but, on the other hand, there is joy that the young generations and tourists who come to this city will be able to come here, to look at the excellent display and see how the citizens of Sarajevo have survived. Today, from this place, we want to send a message that we should remember and take care of all the moments from our past and that this is the only way we can build a better and more prosperous future. The city of Sarajevo will give contribution and support to the Museum.”
