Consul in the General Consulate of BiH in Istanbul Adi Durmić said that there are no citizens of BiH among the killed or injured persons after the attempt of a coup in Turkey.
Durmić said that the situation in Turkey is stabilizing after the authorities of this country prevented the attempt of a military coup organized by lower officers in the army of the Republic of Turkey.
“According to information we have, around 2.500 soldiers, police officers and civilians were arrested. They are suspected of planning and executing the mentioned coup. Around 160 killed and over 1.500 injured people were registered,” Durmić said.
According to Durmić, the General Consulate of BiH in Istanbul was working in full capacity all night, trying to get in touch with BiH citizens and tourist agencies in Istanbul.
“We urge the tourist agencies to send us lists and contact persons of our citizens. There is no cause for concern or panic. Authorities in Turkey are doing everything to stabilize the situation and reestablish the constitutional order and security system in the country. Hopefully, the situation will be entirely stabilized by the end of the day,” Durmić said.
Durmić said that all flights between Sarajevo and Istanbul in both directions are cancelled, so the citizens of BiH will not be able to travel today.
“We still do not know about tomorrow, given that we do not have official information yet. We kindly ask the citizens of BiH who are using road transportation to be patient today and not travel, because we have information that borders are closed and that there are jams on the border crossings with Bulgaria and Greece. The best solution is to wait another day because of the safety, although there is no cause for concern,” Durmić said.
When asked if any citizens of BiH were injured during the attempt of the military coup, Durmić said that the BiH diplomats have contacted the security services.
“According to information we obtained, there are no citizens of BiH among the killed and injured people,” Durmić said.
Durmić said that many inaccurate and unverified information regarding the events in Turkey are being shared with the public.
“We are in Istanbul and as much as we can see the streets are relatively empty and there are no crowds. We hear no gunfire,” Durmić concluded.
