The Ministry of Defense of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH)announced a new planned observation flight over BiH within the framework of the “Open Skies” Treaty, in the period from September 23rd to 27th, 2024.

The Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces of BiH (AFBiH), in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of BiH, the Ministry of Communications and Transport of BiH and Sarajevo International Airport, will carry out an observation flight of Canada, the Federal Republic of Germany, the Republic of Latvia, the Kingdom of Sweden and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in accordance with the provisions of the “Open Skies” international agreement.

“Citizens are informed that this is an announced activity, during which the crew of the plane and the international inspectors will be joined by the accompanying team of the AFBiH and the BiH Ministry of Communications and Transport, and that there is no need for any disturbance,” they stated in the statement.

The observation flight will be carried out by an Airbus A319 OH aircraft of the German Air Force, specially equipped with sensors and cameras for recording territories under the “Open Skies” contract.

The exact time of realization and the path of the observation flight will be agreed during the joint preparation, after the arrival of the delegations at the “Sarajevo” International Airport.

The recording of territories is performed with sensors certified in accordance with the provisions of the Agreement, after they have been inspected by competent specialists of the AFBiH.

The “Open Skies” agreement is one of the security arrangements, which enables the member states to record the territory of the country over which the observation flight is carried out, in order to obtain data on the military forces and their activities. The purpose of the Agreement is to build and develop trust among the members.

BiH acceded to this Agreement in 2003. Since then, in cooperation with other member states, it has been actively participating in the realization of observation flights, both over the territory of BiH and over the territories of other member states, announced the Ministry of Defense of BiH.
