Six people have died in a plane crash near San Diego, California, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said today.

The FAA said the twin-engine Cessna 414, which was en route to Phoenix, Arizona, crashed at around 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, killing all passengers and crew.

The U.S. Coast Guard said searchers found the plane’s remains last night about five miles from the Point Loma neighborhood in San Diego.

The victims have not yet been identified, and the FAA said the plane was owned by Optimal Health Systems, a vitamin and supplement company.

The company said it sold the plane to a private group in 2023.

The pilot of the crashed plane told air traffic control that he was struggling to maintain his course and that the plane was turning toward the coast before returning to the sea, flight tracking website FlightAware reported.

The controller instructed the pilot to land at a nearby naval airport, to which the pilot replied that he could not see him and shortly after called for help several times before losing radar contact.

A man who was surfing at the time of the crash told local television that he saw the plane descend from the sky at an angle, then climb slightly, then crash into the water.
