Posavina: Potential for Production of Energy from BioMass

The Director of the Institute for Genetic Resources of Banja Luka University and the Professor of the Faculty of Agriculture Gordana Đurić asserted that farmers in the Brčko District and municipalities of Šamac, Domaljevac-Šamac, Odžak and Orašje in the Bosnian Posavina and beyond have a huge potential for the production of energy from the agricultural biomass-biodiesel, bioethanol, and biogas-from waste and residues from agriculture and energy crops.

“Biogass can be used for the production of electricity and thermal energy, but also for the production of biomethane that can be further used as a fuel or included into the natural gas area. Regarding liquid biofuels, biodiesel and bioethanol can be used as fuel for motor vehicles, as clean fuel, but also for technical reasons they most often are mixed with fossil fuels’’, explained Đurić.

Đurić concluded that Brčko District and municipality Šamac, Domaljevac-Šamac, Odžak and Orašje in Bosnian Posavina have a big potential for energy production from agricultural biomass, which provides an opportunity for farmers to increase production, reduce costs, earn extra income and build sustainable agricultural development in that part of BiH.

Also, a significant source of energy comes from waste from the food processing industry, especially the production of meat products.
