Privatization, Obstructions and Politics in Spa Spring in Srebrenica

Privatization, obstructions, and politics left the last guard of Banja Guber without a salary for three years. Milorad Kolovic still goes to work and says that he will continue to be guard of the healing water while waiting for better times.

Milorad came to work, as he has been doing every day for the past 8 years. He takes care of the spa at the spring of Crni Guber, healing iron arsenic water. He has not received a salary for 3 years.

Fourteen years after the second privatization, the medical center is collapsing. In the past, there were 80,000 overnight stays here every year. Today, it is desolate.

“Srebrenica is deserted. It became a home for the elderly. There is nothing, our youth left looking for work. There is no work anywhere. There is no bakery, no butchers, we have nothing. We have Guber water, but unfortunately, it goes into the stream,” told Milorad.

From the team of the Government of the Republika Srpska (RS)for the establishment of the Public Health Institution Guber Hospital, it was stated that the analysis showed an unchanged composition of the water. Tests will follow, while the economic feasibility study should be completed during this year.

When asked whether the failed privatization will be annulled and whether the property will be expropriated, they say that the springs themselves are not on private plots and that the lands on which the buildings are located are subject to long-term court proceedings.

The former mayor, and today the vice-president of the entity of RS, Camil Durakovic, claims that everything was controlled by politics.

”The concession was granted to another investor, and the owner of the buildings and the land was someone else, so it was impossible to combine the two since they were political opponents, let me be completely open. And of course, that political animosity led to the blocking of the  development of this company.”, Radio Slobodna Evropa reports.
