The Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina handed down a first-instance verdict sentencing Rade Garic to 20 years in prison for persecution in the Vlasenica area in 1992 and for crimes in Srebrenica in July 1995.

There is a possibility of appealing against this verdict, Birn reports.

Garic’s trial began in October 2018.

He came to the sentencing from the detention in which he has been since March, after he was under other prohibitive measures for several months.

The indictment charges Garic, as a member of the reserve police force in Vlasenica, with murder, imprisonment, torture, rape, enforced disappearances and other acts committed in 1992 in the Vlasenica area.

He is also accused of entering the school premises in Luka with members of the platoon in July 1995, as the commander of the Intervention Squad at the RS Army Vlasenica Brigade, confiscating money and other valuables, and participating in the beating of Srebrenica prisoners.
