The Israeli ambassador to Italy will be summoned to the Foreign Ministry to explain an incident that occurred today in the West Bank city of Jenin, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said.

Italian media reported that a group of foreign diplomats from a number of countries, including Italy, had to take cover during a visit to Jenin after Israeli troops allegedly fired into the air to warn them to take cover.

Diplomatic sources said the EU diplomats were part of the delegation.

The Israeli military said it had fired shots near the diplomatic delegation, which it said had strayed from its approved route in the occupied West Bank and found itself in a place “where it was not authorized to be.”

The statement added that soldiers fired “warning shots to distance them.”

There were no injuries or damage, the Israeli military stressed.

The EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kalas, said she had heard about the incident, which occurred during a visit by international diplomats hosted by the Palestinian Authority.

She called on Israel to investigate and punish those responsible.

The Palestinian Authority said that “the delegation was on an official mission to observe and assess the humanitarian situation, and to document violations of the law committed by [Israel].”
