Rudo: Serbs helped with the Reconstruction of Mekteb School

[wzslider autoplay=”true”]”Every Eid is waited with joy here in Rudo, Eid al Fitr because we fasted the holy month of Ramadan, and Eid al Adha because we are showing that we are ready to sacrifice some of our wealth that the Almighty gave us to use, in His name. The special charm of Eid al-Adha is sharing of kurban meat (cow or sheep sacrificed on Eid al Adha) and it represents a special occasion when we are able to visit all of the returnees in only two or three days,” said Mehrudin ef. Genjga, the Imam of the mosque in Rudo.

Genjga came in Rudo two years ago, and with him the Majlis got imam again for the first time after 20 years. He was born in Travnik and he eventually got used to the local customs. He is waiting for Eid with others, agreeing on kurbans and helping each other.

“Religious life is constantly getting better and improved. Central Bosnia, where I come from, is traditionally strong in terms of religion, opposed to these small border areas where Islam was very poorly practiced and the main idea was communism,” said Genjga.

That is the reason why Rudo is standing out as an example of coexistence and good relations between Muslims and Orthodox Christians.

“Majlis of IC Rudo and its leaders made an outstanding collaboration and relationship with the Orthodox Christians, since the war from 1,992 – 1,995 almost completely destroyed them. We stick to the Sunnah of the Prophet p.b.u.h. when he said: ‘The best man is the one that is the most useful to other people’, “ said Mehrudin ef. Genjga.

Life has never been easy here, nor the reconstruction of buildings or relationships, but there are some and they serve as a lesson to many people.

“We are not taught to hate anyone, Islam is a religion of peace. As the great Mehmed Pasha Sokolovic, who was also from Rudo, was not raised as a fratricide in Istanbul, as some want to present him, lead by the practice of the Prophet p.b.u.h. upon his arrival in Bosnia, he built a mosque in his hometown Sokolovici, as well as the church for his mother who was not a Muslim. With these reconstructions, we are showing that we are the true heirs of Mehmed Pasha Sokolovic, and that we have learned a lesson as well, “said Mehrudin ef. Genjga.

Residents are hoping that the story of the reconstruction of mekteb school from this small Bosnian town on the border with Serbia will bring people and hope for a better life back, and stop people from going away. They are thinking how to bring this area back to life and how to bring back the people.

“This is a question that even the politicians are not allowed to answer, not even during the election campaign”, said the Imam Mehrudin ef. Genjga.
