dogs2Teams of the Sanitary Service will start removing stray dogs from streets of Sarajevo at the end of this week, said Minister of Physical Planning and Environmental Protection of Sarajevo Canton Zlatko Petrović.

He emphasized this after a meeting was held between signatories of Agreement on co-financing rent for shelters for abandoned and lost animals in Prača.  Petrović emphasized that according to the decision of SC Government which refers to activation of sanitary service within the Cantonal Public Utility “Rad“, this Ministry was given legal basis to react and form an adequate service.

He added they got consent from Inspectorate of Veterinary Inspection which will be at disposal to teams, that is, that there are cantonal inspectors or vets from the Cantonal Veterinary Station who would catch a dangerous dog at the site.

He explained this will not be reduced only to catching and euthanizing all dogs, but it will be done in accordance with the Law on Animal Welfare of SC, Law on Veterinary Medicine of SC and Law on Public Health of SC.

”We will also have to expand Sanitary Service within the public utility ‘Rad’ and support other services. I also find another shelter should be opened in accordance with financial abilities”, emphasized Minister Petrović.

He said it is impossible to place 10.000 dogs in shelters, but stages should be implemented gradually.

”We hope this is the beginning of reducing number of stray dogs in SC. We will need specific funds for all of this”, concluded Petrović.

Minister of Economy of SC Emir Hrenovica said that Sarajevo has become “a city of dogs” and that this problem must be solved.

Representative of the Shelter for abandoned and lost animals in Prača in Bosnia-Podrinje Canton Goražde Muris Alić said the shelter is at disposal to help and accelerate solution of the problem.

”There is currently space for 220 more dogs in the shelter, dogs with possibility and perspective of fostering will be accommodated, not for aggressive and sick dogs”, he concluded.
