13063816_1160089187375369_1091127035_oAbandoned and devastated cars on public parking lots in Sarajevo represent a big problem for drivers and members of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Sarajevo Canton (KS). With the implementation of a new law, this problem should be solved soon.

It happens that cars are parked on certain parking lots for months and even years, without the possibility of identifying their owners. Faulty vehicles present an additional problem to the members of the MIA KS. Currently in preparation is a law which stipulates that, regardless of not being registered, the cars that are not in driving condition cannot be parked on marked parking lots.

“The law which would regulate the problem of abandoned cars in Sarajevo should have entered into force last year. Now we are intensely working on making the law effective this year. According to the new law, the problem of abandoned cars will be solved by relevant utility companies, in this case the Cantonal Public Utility Company Rad. Now we can only react if the car owner did not check out the license plates, because owners are obliged to return the license plates within 30 days since the expiration of registration, otherwise they will be financially punished,” stated the Traffic Police of MIA KS.

Currently, the KJKP Rad is removing the abandoned cars from parking lots in Sarajevo upon the order by the Traffic Police.

“Those are abandoned, deserted cars in Sarajevo on whose fate decides the MIA KS. Those cars somehow even present a threat for the environment by creating an image of a landfill, due to the devastated state they are in. Eventually, the MIA KS reaches a decision on whether those cars will be removed from public parking lots. First they search for the vehicle owner and, if that turns out to be impossible, then they call our service to remove the vehicle from a certain parking lot upon the order by the MIA,” stated Mirza Ramić, spokesman of the KJKP Rad.

The issue of abandoned cars is evident the most in Sarajevo municipalities Novi Grad and Novo Sarajevo, with less abandoned cars in Center and Old Town. In addition to occupying parking spaces, such vehicles also represent a huge problem to the Winter Services every year, during regular cleaning of streets.
