High Representative Christian Schmidt said that Constitutional Court judge Zlatko Knežević was exposed to unacceptable pressure from irresponsible politicians.

“BiH Constitutional Court Judge Knežević is exposed to unacceptable pressure from irresponsible politicians. Undermining the independence of any judge is against the basic principles of the rule of law and is an anti-constitutional act,” High Representative Christian Schmidt said today via the OHR BiH Twitter account.

Christian Schmidt called on the members of the National Assembly of the RS to stop the pressure campaign on Judge Knežević and the Court and to fulfill their obligation to respect the Constitution of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“Attacks on the independence of the judiciary violate the rule of law and the Constitution of Bosnia and Herzegovina,” the announcement states.

Judge Knežević recently announced that he will submit a request for early retirement, after the NSRS requested his withdrawal from the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
