Serbia defeated Montenegro 2-0 away in Podgorica in the third round of the UEFA Nations League group stage on Thursday.
After a low-intensity start to the match, a penalty was awarded to Serbia after a clash between Filip Stojkovic and Milan Rodic, with striker Aleksandar Mitrovic making no mistake from the spot.
Though Serbia continued to press for the remainder of the first half, the score remained 1-0 at the break.
The second half saw Vladimir Jovovic flash a 20-meter strike wide for Montenegro, while in the 53rd minute Fatos Beciraj dragged his shot just past the post.
For Serbia, Dusan Tadic’s 55th minute shot deflected of a defender after good work from Mitrovic.
Montenegro coach Ljubisa Tumbakovic was sent to the stands in the 77th minute, having strongly objected to a foul awarded against one of his players.
In the 81st minute, Mitrovic sealed the result with his and Serbia’s second goal, with the assist coming from Sergej Milinkovic Savic. This was Mitrovic’s fourth goal in this season’s Nations League, and his 20th for Serbia.
The result leaves Serbia in first place in League C’s Group 4, with Montenegro third.
Serbia’s next match is in Romania on October 14, when Montenegro will take on Lithuania.
