The Prime Minister of Slovenia, Robert Golob, stated that at the summit of the European Union next week, he would propose that the status of a candidate for membership in the European Union be granted to Bosnia and Herzegovina as well.

Golob welcomed the positive opinion of the European Commission, which today gave a recommendation for granting candidate status to Ukraine and its European perspective.

“As for the proposal to get BiH candidate status along with Ukraine and Moldova, the reality is that only one member can prevent it, but I hope that “common sense will prevail, although in the past there was an abuse of veto rights by some members” used as an instrument of pressure for their own interests that have nothing to do with European values,” said Golob, reports Hina.

He stressed that the Western Balkans deserve separate treatment.

He confirmed that he was familiar with the content of the letter sent by Slovenian President Borut Pahor in support of BiH’s candidacy for EU membership to Charles Michel.

The President of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, who is attending the trilateral meeting on the Brijuni Islands with the Presidents of Croatia and Austria, stated that he had sent an initiative for the European Union to grant Bosnia and Herzegovina candidate status without conditions and negotiations. He says he shared the initiative with friends from the EU.

The 9th trilateral meeting of the presidents of Croatia, Austria and Slovenia is being held on Brijuni. They referred to the current situation in the world. In the foreground were the war in Ukraine, sanctions against Russia and the upcoming energy and food crisis, which is expected to hit Europe in the fall. The talks also focused on EU enlargement to the Western Balkans, Schengen enlargement and the situation in BiH.
