stecciThe Stećci on Mount Ozren could be declared a national monument of B&H, confirmed to Fena experts of the Commission for the preservation of national monuments of B&H, which carried out field work in this area.

These are the areas Travnjak and Bandijera on Ozren, municipality Ilijas. The team from the Commission went to the field, and the decision on proclaiming the necropolis a national monument of B&H will be discussed at the session of the Commission, which will be held from 1 to 3 April in Sarajevo.

The mountaineering club Igman renewed a mountain lodge on Ozren which is found near the Stećci. The president of the mountaineering club Igman Sadik  Spahić said to Fena that the hikers expect a positive decision from the Commission. The necropolis of Stećcis on Bandijera on Ozren are compromised due to extraction of logs after deforestation, and need to be protected from this process.

The first list of Stećci in B&H were published during the Austro-Hungarian period, and the last list of the Stećci in B&H were made during the 1980s by Šefik Bešlagić, who recorded 687 sites with 59.593 Stećci. In his book, Bešlagić said that the highest plateau of the mountain Ozren in the area Bandijera has a necropolis with 26 Stećci.

Together with Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro, B&H will nominate the Stećci for the list of the world heritage from UNESCO, and the application will be sent soon.
