A major tsunami warning has been issued in the Japanese province of Ishikawa, national broadcaster NHK reported, after a series of earthquakes, one of which measured 7.6 on the Richter scale, struck the west of the country today.
The Japan Meteorological Agency has also issued a tsunami warning for coastal regions such as Niigata and Toyama.
NHK TV warned that torrential water could reach up to 5 meters and urged people to flee to higher ground or to the top of a nearby building as soon as possible.
The media reports that a 1.2-meter-high tsunami reached the city of Wajima in Ishikawa, and another that reached 40 cm was recorded in the city of Kashizawaki.
Damage reports were not immediately available. The South Korean Meteorological Agency said sea levels in the eastern province of Gangwon could rise after the earthquake.
Tokyo Electric Power reported that there is a nuclear facility in the area affected by the earthquake.
The plant operator said it was checking for problems, but there were no immediate reports of any irregularities, Klix.ba writes.
