Šuhra giving Candies to Marchers, Marathoners, Cyclists in Potočari

13664612_1230051757045778_1496956433_nFor several years now, Šuhra Malić from Potočari has been giving candies to marchers, cyclists, motorcyclists and others who come to the Memorial Center Potočari on the same roads on which the people of Srebrenica were running away from certain death 21 years ago.

This 80-year-old woman brings as many candies as she can carry to the entrance to the center, asking for nothing but a smile in return.

That smile shows that people are happy to see that someone cares about them and about their decision to pass the roads of salvation.

“I lost many members of my family. I buy candies with the money I get from disability allowance. I lost two sons,” Malić says.

Malić says that steps of the marchers “are steps of her sons, too”.

“I will keep doing this as long as I live. I am happy to see capable people walk and remember the victims of the genocide, my children included,” Malić says.

Malić returned to Potočari from Vogošća, where she was a refugee. She lives alone, but still, Potočari is a place where she feels the best.

“My two sons were buried in 2011 and I cannot be far from them. I have to visit them all the time,” Malić says.

After she bestowed the participants of all marchers who arrived to the Memorial Center yesterday, today Šuhra is coming to the funeral of 127 victims of the genocide.
