The Kremlin said on Monday that talks in Davos on Ukraine’s peace proposals will achieve nothing because Russia is not participating in the talks.
President Vladimir Putin sent thousands of troops to Ukraine in February 2022, sparking the biggest confrontation between the West and Moscow since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, French President Emmanuel Macron and key Middle East leaders are due to attend this week’s World Economic Forum, putting talks on ending the wars in Gaza and Ukraine high on the agenda of the global elite.
“This is just a conversation for the sake of conversation,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said when asked about the talks on Ukraine in Davos
“This process cannot aim to achieve any concrete results for the obvious reason, we do not participate. Without our participation, any discussions are devoid of any prospects for any results,” he said.
Ukraine says it will not withdraw until every Russian soldier is expelled from its territory, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has declared any talks with Russia illegal.
