Trump Refuses To Rule Out The Use Of Military Force Against Greenland

The United States (U.S.) President Donald Trump has renewed his threat to use military force for the potential annexation of Greenland.

“I’m not saying I will do it, but I’m not ruling anything out,” Trump said in an interview.

He emphasized that Greenland is needed by the U.S. for international security.

“Greenland is a very small group of people whom we will take care of, we will nurture them and all that,” Trump said.

Since returning to office as U.S. president in January, Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in taking over Greenland despite Denmark’s opposition.

Greenland has been part of the Kingdom of Denmark since the 18th century, and it was granted self-governance in 1979.

Located between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, it is rich in minerals and has a strategically important position.

Both Denmark and Greenland have rejected any proposal to sell the territory. A survey conducted in January showed that 85 percent of Greenland’s population is against joining the U.S.

In March, Greenland’s newly elected Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen called on European countries to support Greenland, stating that the region is not for sale.

“Be with us and make it clear that Greenland is not and will never be for sale. Greenland is governed by the Greenlandic people and that will never change,” said Nielsen.
