Tusk announced: Europe will prepare New Strategy for the Balkans

The European Council started its session, and one of the most important topics of this session is the question of the political situation in the Western Balkans.

“Tonight we will discuss the Western Balkans, which is crucial for Europe,” said the President of this Council Donald Tusk after the end of the first part of the summit of the EU, and before a working dinner at which was discussed the situation on the territory of the Southeast Europe.

Tusk announced that he will propose a new communication strategy for that area to the leaders of the Member States.

“Our message to that region is very clear – the EU will fulfill its promise that was given in Thessaloniki, which is fully committed to the maintenance of the stability and prosperity of the region. I want the leaders to confirm the European perspective of the Western Balkans,” stated Tusk, as reported by Hina.

At the Thessaloniki Summit in June 2003, leaders of the Member Countries adopted the “Thessaloniki Agenda for the Western Balkans”, the document in which was confirmed the European perspective of the region and indicated priority steps that these countries should undertake on their road towards the EU.

The re-election of Donald Tusk was the first topic of the summit of the EU. Later on, leaders discussed topics of immigration, economy, and employment.
