Semjuel Dedic is among those who left BiH. During the war, he replaced his hometown Mostar with Frankfurt in Germany. He was twenty years old then. After several years of exile, he returned to a city in the south of BiH.
“It’s more a lack of care, organization and some basic order and culture. It’s rare in BiH to see, for example, a garbage container that has all four wheels and a proper lid. Those who are paid to take care of it don’t seem to be interested. And the citizens, it seems to me, got used to it and accepted it as a normal thing. But for me, it’s not normal,” he told.
During the war in BiH, Azra Alibegovic also left her hometown Jajce as a child. She first went with her family to neighboring Croatia, and arrived in Austria in 1995.
“We came during the war and that was the reason we left Bosnia. And the economic and political situation, as well as poor health institutions, are the current reasons why we don’t live in BiH now,” Azra Alibegovic emphasized.
Diaspora sends billions of marks to BiH every year
About 170,000 people left BiH in 2021, and almost half a million citizens left BiH since 2013. These are the results of research by the Union for Sustainable Return and Integration of BiH.
It is estimated that around 260,000 young people, out of half a million of them living in BiH, want to leave BiH. This is stated in a survey by the United Nations (UN) Population Fund, which was published last year.
As they stated, they want to achieve a sense of stability, a better perspective, education and employment.
In a study conducted in 2020 by the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD), it is stated that remittances and other personal transfers from emigrants from BiH are received by every twentieth household in BiH, Radio Slobodna Evropa reports.
