The Sarajevo Canton is implementing an Energy Efficiency Improvement Project, which includes the renovation of 40 public buildings, and is financed by a combination of loans and grants totaling 11 million euros.
“This project is a concrete example of how international cooperation and strategic planning can bring direct benefits to citizens. So far, a total of 32 buildings have been renovated in two cycles, and we plan to complete four more by the end of the year. We are improving living conditions in schools, kindergartens, universities and health institutions, while significantly reducing energy consumption and emissions. Since the project has yielded extremely positive results, we will continue our cooperation with partners in the coming years,” said the Prime Minister of Sarajevo Canton, Nihad Uk.
During 2023, the energy renovation of 15 public buildings in Sarajevo Canton was successfully completed. Within the second cycle, 17 more facilities have been finalized to date, including the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Sarajevo, the Third Gymnasium, the primary schools “Šejh Muhamed ef. Hadžijamaković”, “Osman Nakaš”, “9. maj” Lokve, the Podlugovi primary school, the kindergartens “Mašnica” and “Dunje”, and the Sarajevo Polje Health Center.
The expected benefits of the Project include a reduction in energy consumption by at least 30 percent, which in absolute terms amounts to about 11.67 GWh per year, and a reduction in CO₂ emissions by about 3,420 tons per year. Additional benefits include increased comfort and a higher standard of heating and cooling for users of public buildings, reduced air pollution, and improved visual appearance of renovated buildings.
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) provided a loan of eight million euros, while grant funds in the amount of over three million euros were provided by the European Union, the Government of Austria, and the EBRD Shareholders’ Special Fund for technical assistance, energy audits, and project activities.
