UN Humanitarian Aid Trucks Attacked In Sudan

United Nations (UN) trucks transporting aid to the war-ravaged Sudanese region of North Darfur were attacked, and initial reports speak of multiple casualties, said a spokesperson for the organization.

The Sudanese government stated that guards, drivers, and civilians were killed in the attack, which it blamed on the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group fighting the army in the civil war. However, the RSF blamed the army for the attack, which took place in the town of El-Koma, which is under RSF control. Four members of the UN convoy were killed and two were injured, said RSF spokesperson Basha Tabik in a post on X.

The UN has not stated who they hold responsible but explained that the convoy was attacked while it was waiting to head toward El-Fasher, a besieged city where famine has been reported.

El-Koma Emergency Response, a group of local volunteers, posted on Facebook a video of a burned-out truck loaded with bags of supplies. They blamed the attack on “Sudanese army drones.”

El-Koma had previously been the target of frequent attacks in the conflict between the paramilitary group and the army, resulting in civilian deaths and damage to important infrastructure.

The war, which began more than two years ago, has created one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world. Yesterday, Eujin Byun, spokesperson for the UN refugee agency, said that more than four million people have fled the country since the conflict began.
