The United States Government today officially launched a new five-year project of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) called the Energy Sector Assistance Project (USAID/EPA) in Bosnia and Herzegovina, worth $9.9 million.
This project continues the work of the previous USAID/EPA project, which ended in September 2024, with the aim of strengthening energy security in BiH and the transition to clean energy, USAID announced.
“In the next five years, we want to work on further strengthening energy security, integrating BiH into the broader European and global energy frameworks, and continuing to stimulate the country’s economic growth,” said USAID Mission Director Emily Kofman Krunić.
She emphasized that together we can create a future in which energy not only powers homes and industries, but also contributes to progress, security, and sustainability for generations to come.
In the new project, USAID will collaborate and foster open dialogue with decision-makers, energy and private sector leaders, NGOs, media, and citizens to implement key reforms needed to build a more resilient, diversified, and sustainable energy system.
USAID added that these changes will provide a better system for companies and households, while the transition to renewable energy sources will further improve air quality and citizen health, create new opportunities for local economic development, and create new jobs in the renewable energy sector.
The project encourages private sector investment in clean energy, improves energy efficiency, increases the use of renewable energy sources and electric vehicles, and supports the development of the Southern Interconnection for natural gas with the aim of diversifying BiH’s energy sources and increasing energy security.
The project’s activities also include supporting BiH in adopting an energy and climate plan, as well as laws at the BiH level that will enable BiH to become part of the regional and European energy market, the statement said.
The new USAID project is a continuation of the US Government’s nearly thirty-year partnership with BiH, aimed at developing a safer and more advanced energy sector, protecting the environment, and strengthening the economy.
