What are the most in-demand Occupations in BiH at the Moment?

After finishing high school, young people in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) come to a turning point in their lives when they have to decide whether they will continue their education or start working.

Employment agent and expert in marketing and public relations Dominik Raskaj said that this topic is very complex, but based on the data he has, a large number of young people enroll in professions that are popular, alluding to the professions of lawyer and economist.

Lowest demand

”As for the labor force in BiH, the most open positions are in the construction sector, carpenters, stone masons, electricians, and even plumbers. The second most open positions are in transport, given all the problems that are happening in the customs terminals due to the maintenance of oil and fuel prices and due to the lack of salary increases in that sector. There are more and more shortages in transport,” Raskaj stated.

He added that the most in-demand labor force is in the Tuzla Canton (TC) and Canton Sarajevo (CS). He points out that these cantons are leading compared to other cantons.

”The lowest demand is in the Una-Sana Canton (USC), the Gorazde region, and one part of Herzegovina, the West Herzegovina Canton,” he added.

He emphasized that when it comes to choosing young people for professions, sectors such as lawyers, economists, and other similar professions are filled.

Departure to Germany

”It happens that young people who graduate from college or high school cannot find a quality job in that field in BiH. Another thing is that young people do not think long-term, and think that without a university education or knowledge they can do other work in Germany that does not require that level of education,” Raskaj said.

He adds that looking in the long term, the health benefits that should be paid based on the law are not even registered, because most of the jobs without a university degree in Germany, he says, are done illegally.

”The highest salaries are received in the IT sector in BiH, but also in the Balkans. In Croatia and Serbia, they are leading in terms of salaries, however, the construction sector has also moved in the direction of an increase, since the lack of labor force can be seen and must be attracted in some way, either with more days off or an increase in wages for normal living conditions in BiH,” Dominik Raskaj concluded.
