[wzslider autoplay=”true”]The first idea on the establishment of the National Museum are dating back to the middle of 19th century, when the area of BiH still belonged to the Ottoman Empire.

However, the idea was realized almost 4 decades later, with the arrival of the new Austro-Hungarian rule.

Botanical Garden of the National Museum was established under the direction of famous botanist Karl Mally.

Today, in the Botanical Garden grows about 1,700 species of plants with several thousand plants. From these, about 750 specimens are trees and shrubs, while others are perennial and annual plants.

Botanical Garden is consisted of: flora on slate; flora in the serpentine; flora on dolomite; flora of limestone mountains of BiH (flora of Trebevic, cave flora); flora of Miljacka River valley; succulent plants; flora of mountain gardens; group of wetland and aquatic plants; group of pteridophytes (Pteridophyta); flora of xerothermic habitats; alpinetum; arboretum.

Although interesting in all seasons, the garden is most interesting in the spring, when it turns into a real oasis of peace and beauty in the city.

Botanical garden with its living collections is primarily intended for scientific research in all branches of botany, morphology and systematics to cytology and genetics. Special importance is in applied botany (agronomy, silviculture, floriculture, pharmacy, etc.). Its role in direct teaching of biology (botany) is obvious and necessary at all levels of education, from elementary schools to university, since verbal teaching of botany does not have full value without direct access to studied species.
