During presentation of a six-month report to the Security Council of the UN, the chief prosecutor for the UN Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals Serge Brammertz stated that regional countries have serious problems when it comes to co-operation on war crimes cases and the search of missing persons.

Brammertz stated that all countries in the region adopted the Strategy for Prosecution of War Crimes and they asked for help from the Prosecutor’s Office in The Hague.

“We believe that much more cases will be processed when the problems related to regional cooperation are finally solved,” said Brammertz.

The Prosecutor of Hague Tribunal said that seeking for the remaining 10,000 missing persons should be “the highest priority” in the region.

In the report was also stated that the final verdict for the former president of the RS, Radovan Karadzic, is expected by the end of the year, while the appeal verdict for Ratko Mladic and the first instance verdict to Jovica Stanisic and Franko Simatovic are expected next year.

The report to the Security Council of the UN was also presented by the president of the Mechanism for International Tribunals Theodor Meron, who said that the institution experienced some “unforeseen challenges” after the closing of the Hague Tribunal, but that all the cases are going as planned.

The mechanism is an institution created to finalize the work of the Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda.
