600_1475942684vjetro_nusmir_mekicNusmir Mekić from Banovići, a golden students who recently graduated from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Tuzla with an average grade of 9.75, won the Social Media Award in Copenhagen, Denmark, which brings 1.000 USD to the winner.

This award was established this year and the winner was selected on the basis of the number of votes from visitors to the website of the competition. The competition is titled University Startup World Cup, and Mekić participated with the project VENus.

VENus us a project of small and cheap wind power plants that are mounted on houses and other residential buildings with the aim of reducing costs of electrical energy in households partially or entirely.

“Organizer of the competition is Venture Cup, which has been organizing similar Startup competitions around the world for 16 years now. The first competition was held last year, with 40 teams from 25 countries, and the winner was pronounced by the Danish princess. This year the competition is larger, with a large number of applied projects from more than 50 countries of the world,” said Mekić, adding that young people compete in six different categories during one week.

The aim of the competition is to connect young, innovative people from all around the world and connect them with mentors and businessmen who could help them develop their ideas.

Small wind power plants that Mekić intends to produce were the topic of his graduation paper.

“The idea is to make cheap wind power plants that everyone will be able to afford, the ones which are two or three times cheaper than the conventional ones. Savings depend on wind potentials, and that is why I developed my personal devices for measuring the speed of wind, which are placed on the desired location before the mounting of the power plant. Based on the wind characteristics the power plat is first designed, and then mounted,” said this golden student.
