Tuzla International Airport will soon once again become a base for the airline Wizz Air, marking a significant expansion of the route network and the beginning of a new development phase for this airport. After more than two years of pause, Wizz Air will base two aircraft at Tuzla Airport, and as a result, as many as eight new direct routes to European cities will be established.
The restoration of the Tuzla – Vienna air route began in mid-June and is operated four times a week. In the second phase, starting from early September, flights to Hamburg, Frankfurt-Hahn, Paris, Cologne, Malmo, Gothenburg, Berlin, and Brussels are planned. These destinations have been carefully selected to improve the region’s connectivity with Western Europe, as well as to meet the needs of numerous citizens who live and work abroad.
This expansion is the result of a public call intended for airlines interested in opening new routes, announced by the Ministry of Trade, Tourism, and Transport of Tuzla Canton (TC) in cooperation with the Tourist Board of TC. Through this program, the Government of TC provided subsidies for launching routes that did not have regular traffic in the previous 12 months.
For the implementation of the planned activities, 1.2 million BAM has been allocated, while an additional 1.5 million BAM is intended for the modernization of airport infrastructure, including the installation of new runway lighting, which was a technical requirement for the airline’s return.
The return of Wizz Air represents a potential turning point for Tuzla International Airport, which in the previous period recorded a decline in revenue and profit, as well as a reduction in the number of employees.
With the planned arrival of one million passengers over the next four years through subsidized flights, it is expected that TC will once again become a strong regional hub, and Tuzla Airport will regain its position as one of the busiest in the country.
