Women Of Srebrenica: Genocide Must Not Be Forgotten, Wars Must End

Members of the Citizens’ Association Women of Srebrenica gathered on Saturday in Tuzla in memory of the crime committed in Srebrenica. On this October 11th, they were joined by students, citizens, and representatives of organizations from several cities. Together, they sent the message that crimes must not be forgotten. Along with remembering their loved ones, they did not forget the suffering of the people in Palestine and Ukraine.

The gathering of members of the Association Women of Srebrenica in Tuzla is always filled with sorrow and pain. That does not stop them from reminding the public every month that they are still searching for their loved ones, that not all mortal remains have been identified, and that not all those responsible for that crime have been punished.

“All of that is trauma, all of that needs to be somehow packed, arranged, set, left. And what hurts us the most, it really hurts us that the genocide is denied and that the victims are minimized, our loved ones are belittled,” said Nura Begovic, president of the Citizens’ Association Women of Srebrenica.

For more than thirty years, they have been seeking truth, justice, and punishment for the criminals. Alongside them on this October 11th were associations from Modrica, Bosanski Samac, Odzak, Gradacac, Vogosca, and Podrinje.

“Our goal is to send a message and appeal to all those who can help in the search for the missing, who are still officially listed as missing, to help find them so that their bodies can be buried with dignity,” emphasized Kada Balta, president of the Association of Organizations of Families of Martyrs and Fallen Soldiers of the Municipality of Vogosca.

“We came here by bus with our women, mosque-goers, and children, to give support to the mothers of Srebrenica so they know that we are always here for them and that we must not allow them to be left alone,” said Almina Kujrakovic, coordinator of the Department for Marriage and Family of the Majlis Islamic Community Modrica.

“Their pain is our pain as well. And what I will emphasize is that today we came with our children from mekteb and high school students to educate and encourage young people not to forget what happened in Srebrenica,” said Amina Karahmetovic on Saturday, a member of the Majlis Islamic Community of Bosanski Samac.

While the participants of the peaceful gathering remembered the victims of the genocide in Srebrenica, they also thought about the suffering of the people of Palestine and Ukraine. They sent a message to the whole world, especially to those who are killing innocent civilians, that wars must end.
