13152609_1169749186409369_855123676_nGiven that the number of people who look for a place where they could get a piece of bread to survive is increasing every day, construction of a social center in the city on Neretva, which would accommodate a soup kitchen and student center for impoverished students, is of great significance.

This center will have the capacity to accommodate 150 students who are not able to pay for costs of studying.

When the Mostar friars came up with the idea to launch one such project, they could not even imagine that the premises of the former Croatian Cultural-Artistic Society “Hrvoje” would soon rise in a new light. Step by step, thanks to donations, they provided 1.1 million BAM which they used to pay for permits and works executed so far.

According to the Friar Iko Skoko, guardian of the Franciscan Monastery of the Saint Peter and Paul in Mostar, it takes a lot more money to make the facility ready for moving in, but he still hopes that humane people will keep supporting this project.

“Number of young people who would like to study but do not have the opportunity because attending a university is becoming increasingly expensive is growing every day. Parents find it hard to finance one child, let alone more children, which is why this center is necessary,” Skoko said. A modernly equipped student center with a series of amenities and the International Center for Dialogue will cover 3.500 square meters.

It was planned that the students work in the facility and thus finance their accommodation in the student center. They would volunteer in the soup kitchen which should provide food for 200 persons every day. In the summer period, when students are not in the center, rooms will be rented to tourists, which is another way of trying to make the facility sustainable.

In addition to being at service to the citizens of Mostar, the center will be open for all those who come to study in this city, while the soup kitchen will be open for all those who feel the need to visit one.
