The head of the Roman Catholic Church and the Vatican, Pope Francis, has been diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia, and additional tests have shown a further complication in the Pope’s clinical condition.
“Laboratory tests, chest X-rays and the clinical condition of the Holy Father continue to present a complex picture,” the Vatican said in a statement released late in the afternoon.
On Friday, the 88-year-old Pope Francis was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital due to breathing difficulties due to bronchitis.
The Vatican said the polymicrobial infection the Pope is suffering from required the use of antibiotic therapy with cortisone, which makes therapeutic treatment more complex.
The statement said Pope Francis remained in good spirits and called on the faithful to pray for him.
