Zvizdic: More than 30 Thousand former BiH Citizens could return their BiH Citizenship

The Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denis Zvizdić, sent today a parliamentary initiative requesting the initiation of the procedure for concluding the Agreement on Dual Citizenship between BiH and Germany.

In that case, as stated by Zvizdić on his Facebook profile, more than 30 thousand former BiH citizens could return the BiH citizenship that they had to renounce earlier.

“Given the information that the Federal Republic of Germany plans to adopt a new Law on Citizenship by the end of 2023 that allows dual citizenship of the Federal Republic of Germany and Bosnia and Herzegovina, it is necessary, in accordance with Article I paragraph (7) point d) of the Constitution of Bosnia and Herzegovina, to proceed with the conclusion of the Agreement on Dual Citizenship citizenship between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Federal Republic of Germany. The aforementioned constitutional provision prescribes that “citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina may have dual citizenship of another state, provided that there is a bilateral agreement between Bosnia and Herzegovina and that state regulating this issue…”, Zvizdić wrote in the explanation.

He points out that in the case of concluding a bilateral agreement, all current and former citizens of BiH who had to renounce BiH until now would be in an equal position because the legislation of the Federal Republic of Germany does not allow dual citizenship of BiH and the Federal Republic of Germany. Article 14 of the Law on Citizenship, as he adds, prescribes easier admission to citizenship for former BiH citizens, and in case of conclusion of the Agreement, re-admission to Bosnia and Herzegovina and BiH citizenship would not be conditioned by renouncing FR German citizenship.
