The project of the liberation of such a large area that was inaccessible to the local population of Konjic decades after the war has just been completed. The area of 3.8 million square meters of mined areas in the areas of the local communities of Josanica and Turija, which are inhabited and located in the immediate vicinity of the Konjic area, were cleared and handed over to the local community.
The project was financed by U.S. State Department, while funds were channeled through ITF Enhancing Human Security. The significance of this project for the clearance of the mined area is the fact that in all the post-war demining projects that had been completed in this municipality, with 1.4 million square meters have been cleared, while only 3.8 million square meters were not.
The project lasted five months and field activities were followed by a comprehensive introduction of the local population with the demarcated area. Exceptional cooperation was also achieved with the local authorities. The implementation of the demining activities is the Center for the training of mine detection dogs in Bosnia and Herzegovina – MDDC with its demining teams. A total of 76 mine-explosive devices were found and destroyed.
The mayor of Konjic Municipality, Emir Bubalo, sent a letter to the US Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in which, on behalf of the inhabitants of the municipality of Konjic, faced with the great problem of mine danger, thanked them for their unselfish support in demining BiH, and thanked MDDC for a great job done.
