A tsunami has hit the Japanese coast, and the population is still being evacuated after a strong 7.4 magnitude earthquake hit Japan today.

“All residents should immediately evacuate to higher ground,” reported Japan’s national broadcaster NHK after the earthquake hit the Noto Peninsula. The earthquake was registered around 4:10 p.m. local time (8:10 a.m. CET).

The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that a series of earthquakes, one of which was of magnitude 7.4, struck Ishikawa Prefecture and the surrounding area.

The agency issued a major tsunami warning for Ishkawa and lower-level warnings for the rest of Honshu’s northwest coast. Japanese public broadcaster NHK TV warned that water surges could reach up to five meters in height and urged citizens to take shelter on higher ground or nearby skyscrapers as soon as possible.
